There is no perfect size, however you both require sufficiently small where by they cannot get their beaks in, or large enough to allow them to get them out. I am using 1" x 1" recently and it really works Alright. The more compact sizes of wire can lead to some birds breaking the guidelines of their beaks off, even though a size of say, one" x 2"
